Matt (BIG) and Norman (LITTLE) have been matched for over 11 years and have grown to be life-long friends. Norman has been a Little since he was 11 years old and grew up in a big family, but he was the only boy among 3 sisters. According to Norman, Matt was instrumental in shaping who he is and was a very important male role model and mentor who became almost like a real brother.

Here at the Boys and Girls Club we care about kids. Our programs are committed to the healthy development of all children. But perhaps you don’t realize just how much of an impact our programs can make. One of our Club Coordinators observed the impact our club had on not just kids, but an entire family.

Brittney Hislop has known the Uguak family for 11 years now. The mother, Akon, raised six children almost completely on her own as her husband resided in South Sudan and could only travel to Edmonton every 3 to 4 months. As a working mother, the Boys and Girls Club provided crucial support for her and her family. She worked as a cleaner for the club and would come in every other day to accomplish the tasks required. As the only coordinator at the club during these times, Bittney was able to develop a relationship with Akon. She shares, “I was able to talk to her about the kids, help her with her resume and help her look for work.” The club’s support has been invaluable for Akon. She often tells the staff how much she appreciates having the club around. She’ll even tell you that the club is a main reason her kids are turning out so great as we helped raise them.

Akon’s kids have turned out great. Her 2nd oldest, Aher, is in his third year of college basketball. He currently plays for Loyola University in Chicago. His younger brother, Lwal has just recently moved to Connecticut where he has accepted a football scholarship to the University of Connecticut. The week before Lwal left for university he came into the club to say goodbye. Brittney recalls the experience. “Of course I teared up and told him how proud I was of him. As we were sitting in the office chatting he told me how much the club has meant to him and all of the other things we have taught and helped him with over the years.” The Club has been a support and safe haven for Lwal and he hopes to be able to give back someday. Having connected with the Uguak family and watched the kids transition successfully into adulthood, Brittney knows how vital the Club has been to their achievements. She says “Lwal is such a great example of what consistent adult mentorship can do for a youth.” Despite the odds stacked against them, the Uguak kids have flourished. We can’t wait to see what the rest of them accomplish!

These programs offer safety, positive youth development activities and academic enrichment to support positive self-image and self-confidence, improved academic performance, and engagement in learning.

BGCBigs’s operates nineteen afterschool Club programming sites. These sites are spread throughout Edmonton in communities faced with poverty and crime; many are within close to City of Edmonton low-income housing developments; neighborhoods also often have high immigrant populations

Summer programming is offered by BGCBigs in partnership with many organizations to support the delivery of summer program activities that engage refugee and immigrant children and youth. The programs link children and youth with mentors of different ages, cultural backgrounds, and interests. Activities strengthen their physical and mental well-being, minimize learning loss over summer months and improve their ability to achieve success in school.

SUCCESSESServing Immigrant, Newcomer and Indigenous ChildrenOver the past year, BGCBigs has seen a great influx in the number of immigrant and newcomer children and youth to club and mentoring programs. Of particularly focus is the impact of the increase in numbers of immigrant and newcomer children served in our programs, the culturally sensitive programs to build youth resiliency, and the community work being done in Edmonton between the agency and other partners BGCBigs is seeing a growing agency need to broaden its volunteer base so that it can be intentional in recruiting citizens who can speak the language and understand the cultural sensitivities as these children, youth and families are transitioning to their new life. In response to the opportunity presented by these experiences and these leaders, BGCBigs works with an Advisory Committee to help it create a more diverse community of mentors and volunteers. The Committee represented a collection of cultural leaders, as well as BGCBigs staff, volunteers, and external partners

Youth EmploymentOur agency focused on serving BGCBIGs youth from diverse backgrounds and we worked to remove barriers that existed for many of them on a path to job readiness and employment. Our goal was to provide clarity and information on how to obtain a first job and build some foundational skills in their early teen years. We engaged in activities involving 1:1 career mentoring matches, job-readiness group programs with school and volunteer support, and a collection of events and activities with businesses, employers and community partners. These events included job-readiness workshops, employer tours, job shadowing and work experience, and interview opportunities. BGCBigs staff, partners, and volunteers provided support in the following areas: job search, resumes building, career/post-secondary information, interview preparation, professionalism, financial literacy, and career options and exploration. In the last year, a total of 73 youth received a combination of practical work experience, career development/network support, and skills development.

Evaluation and Building CapacityThe BGCBigs evaluation framework and capacity building has become embedded in the culture and policies of the agency. Thus, it will become a fundamental part of the agency operations and practices. However, in order to sustain the relevance of the evaluation framework and its usefulness and meaningfulness to our agency (that will undoubtedly undergo changes as the population of children and youth we serve also changes) the evaluation framework will be reviewed and refreshed periodically by the agency to ensure it still informs the evaluation needs and capacity of BGCBigs. We know we will continue to evolve as an agency and that we must ensure our evaluation framework evolves as well to meet our agency’s needs.

21st Century mentoringOn July 18th and 19th BBBS staff as well as community members met in Edmonton to discuss 21st Century Challenge for Mentoring: Volunteer Recruitment. We were able to discuss challenges we had experienced in recruiting thus far, particularly as it relates to serving Indigenous children and youth, and brainstormed possible collaborative strategies going forward. Edmonton, Saskatoon, and Grande Erie teams meet on a regular basis to share best practices and learnings to better serve our children and youth.

United Way of Alberta Capital RegionWe are privileged to have been a United Way Funded Partner for the past 30+ years. Boys & Girls Clubs Big Brothers Big Sisters is a proud partner of All in for Youth. This first-of-its-kind local initiative focuses on getting children and youth successfully through their education years and on to high school completion. Education is the foundation for a bright future. But sometimes in life, challenges get in the way and extra support is needed. When students face personal, learning or family related difficulties it can reduce their chances of completing high school and increase their chances of continuing to struggle in the future. All in for Youth brings together programs and services in a new way to help every child achieve their very best, by providing support to them and their families. By taking care of critical needs now, we stand a far better chance of helping them get through tough times, build skills and set children up for academic success.

City of Edmonton – Family and Community ServicesThe City of Edmonton FCSS core funding that enable to us to be sustainable and continue to meet the needs of our children and youth. They generously provide financial support of over $500,000 annually to our organization. They have not only provided necessary funding to continue operations but have also enabled staff to get valuable education. Just this past year, they helped us address emergent needs and trends that our youth are facing by funding five staff members to receive Project Impact training with Dr. Steve Patty, a renowned evaluation specialist from the US, over a nine month period. This training helped build the agency’s evaluative mindsets in participant outcomes through the program delivery model. FCSS had also been at the forefront of prioritizing diversity inclusion with our agency by providing seed funding for three years that goes towards staffing for our inclusion programming.

Edmonton Community FoundationThe Edmonton Community Foundation has supported Boys & Girls Clubs Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area for over 20 years. Their donations have been invaluable as they have gone towards sustaining operations. Not only does ECF fund our core work that is vital to this agency but they have been working with us on new programs based on emerging trends. In 2017, we learned from Statistics Canada that 73% of youth in Canada get their first job from their parents’ networks. Half of our youth are newcomer, immigrant or aboriginal, and because of this, often don’t have the same access to their parents’ networks. With further discussion with our youth, they told us that many of them were looking for work after school and during the summer to help support their families. We shared these results with the ECF who provided us with seed funding for a “Vital Signs” grant. This enabled us to hire a full time Youth Employment Coordinator for the next three years. We have also been able to use the funding from EFC to leverage funding from other corporations and government entities by asking them to match their donation

Government of CanadaWe are so grateful for the Government of Canada’s support for immigrant and newcomer children and youth, ensuring that they have safe places to go after school and during the summer, and a positive role model in their lives. In addition, we have received additional financial support through our Circle Program, an initiative supporting at-risk youth and ensuring they are matched with a mentor.

Government of Alberta We have received financial support from various departments of the Alberta Government over the past year to support our mentoring, after-school program, and renovations to our Kinsmen Club Site. In addition, we are pleased to have formally launched a partnership with Alberta Education for corporate mentoring. BGCBigs has a strong commitment to work with our community around children and youth involved with Children Services. Our youth in care program provides one to one support as well as group mentoring for youth aged 6-24 years that have prevention or intervention status with the government. Through funding from the Government of Alberta, our Youth in Care program focuses on the most critical issues which youth are facing such as schooling, housing, mental health, and relationships. Edmonton is also a member of the Youth in Care Alberta Committee, working to increase the number of youth in care with mentors in three communities in the province of Alberta.
